1. One book that changed your life: The Politics of Jesus by John Howard Yoder

2. One book that you’ve read more than once: The Long Loneliness by Dorothy Day

3. One book you’d want on a desert island: I guess I should answer The Bible, huh?

4. One book that made you laugh: How to Be a Canadian is one recent humorous read.

5. One book that made you cry: I got teary reading Sister Dianna Ortiz’s The Blindfold’s Eyes: My Journey From Torture To Truth and Mark Danner’s The Massacre at El Mozote

6. One book that you wish had been written: This is a toughie.

7. One book that you wish had never been written: Not comfortable answering this. While certainly there are a multitude of books that have been damaging to the human family, who is to say that they should never have been written? We’re all just trying to work things out here on earth.

8. One book you’re currently reading: The Dispossessed by Ursula K. Le Guin and The Sorrows of Empire by Chalmers Johnson

9. One book you’ve been meaning to read: The Spirit of Democratic Capitalism by Michael Novak (you know, so I can better understand how these types think), The Compendium of the Social Doctrine of the Church (it’s only a couple hundred pages??), Does God Need the Church?: Toward a Theology of the People of God by Gerhard Lohfink.

You’re supposed to “tag” someone else when you complete your list, so I’m tagging anyone who wants to do this. Put it on your blog or in the comments here.

When asked what book he would want if stranded on a desert island, G.K. Chesterton replied, “Why, a book on shipbuilding, of course.”

So the question ‘what book do I wish hadn’t been written’ gave me pause as well Mikey. I believe in freedom of expression so much that I hesitate to say that I wished anything not be written, but thinking about it, how can it be wrong to say that I wish someone hadn’t lied… “Protocols of the Elders of Zion” for instance? Or at least to wish that something that had been written hadn’t been published, because is served as propaganda… ie “Mein Kampf”? Is wishing that someone do the right thing the same thing as advocating the restriction of inherent freedoms?
